As a Presbyterian, Robertson dissented from the Church of England and championed Locke’s 1689 “Letter 24 PAUL DOUGLAS NEWMAN Concerning Toleration” and Parliament’s “Act of Toleration,” which banned the persecution of dissenters (Anonymous, 1911:307–16; Sheldon, 2001:4).
