Because Devadatta is fat and because people must eat in order to be fat and can do so during either the day or the night, you know by implication or disjunctive reasoning that Deva~ datta must eat at night. Another example is you know some~ one is in your two~room house, but you do not see him in the front room. By implication or a process of elimination you know he must be in the back one. (6) There are four types of absences: prior, disintegrated, mutually exclusive and absolute.

It is a metaphysical entity, what a thing is like, and as. such is a conventional truth, Thus with bare yogic perception you directly apprehend the ultimate truth of the impermanence of your five aggregate physical and mental faculties which are BARE PERCEPTION 29 known in terms of a conventional "I" lacking a permanent or substantially existing identity. Indirectly, you apprehend the conventional truth of this permanent Identitylessness of your conventional "I". Thus directly you apprehend what you are and indirectly how you exist.

Furthermore, if from where you are standing you cannot be sure whether this object is a fire or a red cloth, you can also be validly aware of the fact that the attentiveness of it as a fire will have to be induced by the power of another cognition. In other words, you realise that only by having a closer look can you become attentive of the fact that if it were not a fire you could not see it as a fire. Thus when seeing this item as merely as red object you can validly know that it is not self-evident that it is a 11re.
