But what are the options for the 98% of homebuyers who cannot afford the services of an architect? Can we envision new tools and methods that empower them to shape their own environments to their needs? One emerging technology that may help accomplish this goal is that of reconfigurable construction systems—changeable assemblies of building components like walls, ceilings, and floors.
We defined a single goal of securing land for park development—a difficult task given that the port owned the land and would receive minimal financial gain from using it as a park. We then supported our effort by collecting demographic information and park-related statistics about the immediate neighborhood. We provided additional information showing the benefit of a new waterfront park at Union Point. It was important for us to define the campaign in simple terms and discuss issues in ways that would resonate with a diverse population.
To this end they collected three thousand signatures and one hundred letters of support from citizens and community-based and nonprofit organizations. As a result of this demonstration of public support, the City and Port of Oakland agreed to work together with FROSI and develop a park at Union Point.
