' This notion of social responsibility linked Clarkebury to its sister institutions such as Adams, Healdtown, and Lovedale and provided the inspiration for a whole generation of African students. In Alfred Xuma's case, the exhortations he heard from Rev. 49 School authorities liked what they saw in young Xuma and invested him with extra responsibilities.
