From earliest times commercial caravans plied the major highways, carrying their products, precious objects, and luxuries; and providing for the needs of the caravans and their security, became a constant source of income. These ways, however, were not open for trade and commerce alone: military campaigns and conquests also trod them throughout history, leaving in their wake destruction and desolation. In most periods the Holy Land was dominated by major foreign powers, northern or southern, who mainly strove to secure a hold on these routes.

Many settlements were founded, mainly in the fertile valleys and on the edge of the desert. It was at this time that copper first came into use alongside stone implements. The later phase of this age is called the Ghassulian culture, after a group of small mounds in the southeastern part of the Jordan Valley, where the culture was first discovered (Teleilat Ghassul); it later became well known from several sites near Beer-sheba. These settlements spread over wide areas and were not fortified; the inhabitants were engaged in agriculture, herding, and household industries, including copper working.
